Watching COPART auto auctions for a father son project, a 2002 Mustang came up with what appeared to be minimal Damage and low… 92K miles. I was lucky and won the auction for $450. My son and I picked it up the next Friday. (Day 1 Pic) He was thrilled. We got home, charged the battery, checked the oil and added gas…. Fired right up!. After a quick neighborhood drive it was apparent it needed work.We repaired the damage to the rear qtr. Searched local wrecking yards that would allow minors in (some don’t) found a bumper cover on a GT that provided other goodies such as the 8.8 trac lockrear end. We rebuilt that and added some used 4.11 gears. Craigslist was our next source, as we found a nice GT hood as well for 75$. So far we have repaced the clutch assy, rebuilt the T5 (Thanks You tube) replaced the u joints and all the rear brake components and hoses.
For future autocrossing fun we have added subframe connectors, welded the torque boxes, added poly bushings. This was great because my son learned to Mig Weld… We have more to go Roll Bar, New carpet for Christmas, rebuild the front end, Cobra R front brakes, a fun strong v6 Stoker build aiming for 275-300 HP. We are working in typical cluttered garage, it slows down the work but it gets done. He’s 13 now and we need to get to work to finish paint and body etc before he begins to drive it.
The nice is we have all the tools and I get to spend time with my son every weekend passing on the knowledge I have gained form my car hobby that began for me when I was 6 with a 1940 Ford Coupe my Dad bought for me $25 with a nailhead Buick engine that had three deuces.
Cars are an American way of life… and a great distraction from day to day work issues.
Thank you Stacey for allowing me to share my sons project… his first car…
